The very nature of travel—venturing into the unknown—aligns well with the concept of randomness. Additionally, Gen Z’s preference for visiting lesser-known destinations over mainstream tourist hotspots, in an effort to share unique experiences and stand out, has contributed to the rise of random travel as a trend.
Random Traveling
Random traveling is an emerging trend on social media. Some choose their travel spots by throwing a pen on a map, while others visit places with zip codes that match randomly drawn numbers. While the methods vary, the core idea remains the same—embracing the spontaneity of unplanned travel.
Apps Recommending Random Destinations
The Korea Tourism Organization has embraced this trend by introducing the “Destination Mystery Box” feature on its travel information service, Visit Korea. Additionally, an app that recommends random tourist destinations was launched, attracting over 20,000 users eager to explore random places.
Let’s Get Lost
Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air has been offering a mystery flight experience called “Let’s Get Lost” since 2018. Passengers board without knowing their destination, receiving only minimal details— such as weather conditions and suggested items to pack—before takeoff. For this reason, many eagerly capture the moment when flight attendants finally announce the destination.
