Dove Real Beauty Redefined for the AI Era

For two decades, Dove’s “Real Beauty” campaign has challenged narrow beauty standards, championing individuality as the true definition of beauty. In 2024, to mark the campaign’s 20th anniversary, the brand set out to redefine real beauty for the AI era. When prompted to generate an image of a “beautiful woman,” image-generation AIs often return results featuring young, thin, blonde women—exposing the biases inherent in the data they’re trained on. Recognizing this, Dove took action to help AI learn what real beauty looks like. In collaboration with Pinterest, Dove invited users to create videos using images that represent beauty for them. By sharing these videos, users helped transform Pinterest’s AI algorithm. To amplify its message globally, Dove showcased AI-generated visuals created using the prompt “imagine a gorgeous woman according to Dove’s Real Beauty Ad” across the globe, Once again reinforcing the brand’s image in the public eye.
