The growing popularity of golf in Korea has been partly driven by the rise of indoor simulated golf, which
enables players to enjoy the sport without the need for large outdoor spaces. Simulated golf provides a
convenient and cost-effective way for people to play, making the sport more accessible. During the COVID-19
pandemic, interest in golf surged while movie theater attendance declined, paving the way for a unique
concept: CGV’s short-game golf studio, THE APPROACH.
In February 2023, CGV Songpa launched THE APPROACH, an indoor golf simulator studio created by
repurposing a movie theater. The cinema’s spacious seating area, originally designed for over 250 viewers,
along with a 600-inch giant screen and an 8m-high ceiling, made it an ideal setting for an open-area indoor
golf simulator. The space was further enhanced with artificial grass in varying lengths to replicate different
outdoor terrains, and a bunker filled with sand sourced from Jumunjin in Gangneung to deliver a distinctive
golfing experience unlike traditional indoor golf studios.
In addition to its expansive space and large screen, THE APPROACH owes its popularity among avid indoor
golfers to its integration of advanced theater technologies. Projection technology ensures the screen remains
visually clear even under bright lighting, while the air adjustment system minimizes dust during bunker shots,
creating an enjoyable environment.
CGV also leveraged its 4DX technology, which engages the senses of smell, touch, and sight, to elevate
the experience further. The multiplex chain has emphasized its commitment to transforming golf spaces to
stimulate all five senses, creating spaces where players can feel the wind and smell the grass, simulating the
ambiance of an outdoor golf course through the integration of cutting-edge cinematic technology.
