Over the past five decades, filmmaking has advanced dramatically—from cutting-edge cameras and CGI to immersive sound. Yet one element has remained largely unchanged: closed captions. Traditional captions are static lines of text that fail to convey who’s speaking, how loud something is, or the emotional tone behind a sound. For deaf and hearing-impaired audiences, this has meant experiencing films through an incomplete lens. “Caption with Intention” is a dynamic captioning system that visualizes how dialogue is delivered. By assigning different colors to each character and synchronizing color changes with speech, the system indicates who is speaking and when. It also adjusts font size to reflect volume. Following 10 months of development and testing with 115 participants, the campaign is expected to deliver a more immersive and expressive film experience for deaf and hard-of-hearing communities.
