Beyond Equality launched a campaign titled “See What She Sees,” aimed at raising awareness about women’s safety issues and encouraging men to take meaningful action. The campaign was inspired by a moment on The Graham Norton Show, when actor Saoirse Ronan responded to Paul Mescal’s comment about never imagining needing to use a phone to defend himself during an attack. She replied, “That’s what girls have to think about all the time.” The campaign highlights the stark contrast in how men and women experience the same everyday situations. Drawing from data showing that seven out of ten women feel anxious in public spaces, it illustrates how objects as simple as keys for men can serve as handheld protection for women. On public transport, while women worry about unwanted physical contact—“mind the rub”—men are simply “minding the gap.” Through this lens, the campaign sheds light on the many ways in which men may remain unaware of women’s safety concerns. Beyond Equality highlights the importance of men recognizing safety concerns through the lens of women’s experiences and contributing to a safer, more inclusive society. The campaign calls for their deeper understanding and real action to prevent sexual violence and promote gender equality.
